Mathematics is fun! Of course it can be challenging, but that’s part of what makes it such an exciting sublect to study: an understanding of mathematics gives us a whole new way to see the world!
I am based in Leigh-on-Sea and am happy to travel to the student’s address.
Message me to find out how I can help you with your mathematics study.
My Approach
Mathematics is one of the most creative subjects to learn. I believe in taking a reasoned approach to engender understanding, and then plenty of practice to build confidence, competence and a sense of pride and achievement. It’s often said that mathematics is something the student has to do, and this is very true: it is almost like being an athlete.
I always assess my students at first meeting, this is through a short test dependent upon where the student is and what the goals are. I test the fundamentals first, as maths requires the foundation to be solid so that concepts and ideas can be developed. A fundamental part of the process of developing mathematical skills comes from establishing where the student needs extra help and establishing a program to close these skills gaps, and this is the objective of the initial assessment.
I set, mark and grade weekly homework, this gives the student plenty of practice answering real-life examination questions and developing their all-important problem-solving skills. I review each paper with the pupil, which again shows areas of weakness and skill/knowledge gaps, giving us the opportunty to systematically address these.
My teaching philosophy is to ‘aim high’. there’s nothing more demotivating than performing repetitive tasks with an unclear outcome: I connect topics to work the student has done before and I show where this work leads us. If time allows I will also demonstrate ideas from higher levels to show where the knowledge the student is building can lead. I also try to connect ideas to real-life experience.
Language and communication is an important part of mathematics at all levels, and it is important the student can interpret ideas and explain conclusions, this is a good barometer of the student’s own understanding. Exam technique is also important, ultimately the student needs to be able to get through the examinations. I am able to coach on exam technique and in particular problem-solving techniques and time management.
I teach to GCSE Foundation and Higher, as well as the Advanced FSMQ and A-level, including mechanics, statistics and further pure mathematics. I can provide insight to students who wish to explore beyond this level. I am also more than happy to work with adults who wish to learn something new. I have at my disposal copies of text books covering secondary mathematics to Key Stage 4 and A-level text in maths and further maths texts in pure mathematics, mechanics and statistics. I have also a selection of degree-level books in, for example, calculus, analysis, number theory, mechanics and statistics, as well as books on popular and recreational mathematics.
Yes, you read that right! – recreational mathematics is fun, and I am happy to recommend books, authors, YouTube channels and other sources of problems which entertain, challenge and consolidate existing student knowledge.
I’m a Chartered Accountant of almost twenty five years standing, I’ve worked for myself since 2000 and have experience in advising and working with many different types of business. As a manager, training and motivation is an important function of my role, to this end I am both passionate and knowledgeable about the skills I teach.
